I'm working on a creative writing project for university, and for some reason I've chosen to work on the idea of twisting fairytales. I started this project about... three weeks ago. Since then I've been researching the idea of twisting fairtytales and I've found that there's a lot of material in that specific idea. On TV there's Grimm, Once Upon A Time, The 10th Kingdom and Tin Man. With Movies/Films, there's Red Riding Hood, Snow Queen, Penelope, Enchanted, Jack and the Beanstalk: The True Story and Ever After, and of course, the newest version of Snow White "Snow White And The Huntsman" which is being released in summer of this year (possibly don't quote me on this), and will be starring Kristen Stewart (The pale and emotionless actress from Twilight, sorry to your Twilight fans)
I do sometimes wonder what our fascination with fairytales actually is. I was personally addicted to reading Little Red Riding Hood when I was a little kid. My cousins all loved Beauty and The Beast, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid. When you consider that most fairytales were bastardised for the sole purpose of not traumatizing children, is it really a wonder that we're all so addicted to fairytales? Everyone has a favorite, be it Cinderella or the Three Little Pigs, there is always a favorite fairytale that we remember enjoying as kids. So if you can be bothered, feel free to comment with your favorite fairytale and why.
